What Is a House of Quality?

The House of Quality is the central tool of Quality Function Deployment (QFD). It is a structured matrix that translates the voice of the customer into measurable engineering requirements — so teams build what customers actually value.

If you have ever struggled to decide which features or specifications deserve the most attention, the House of Quality gives you a repeatable, data-driven answer. It connects what customers want to how you will deliver it, then ranks each technical requirement by impact.

The parts of the House of Quality

The matrix gets its name from its house-like shape. Each "room" has a purpose:

  • Customer Requirements (WHATs) — the needs and expectations of your customers, each rated for importance.
  • Technical Requirements (HOWs) — the measurable engineering characteristics that satisfy those needs.
  • Relationship Matrix — the body of the house, scoring how strongly each HOW addresses each WHAT (typically 1, 3, or 9).
  • Correlation Roof — the triangular top, showing where technical requirements support or conflict with one another.
  • Customer Planning — importance, current and planned satisfaction, improvement ratio, sales point, and normalized customer weight.
  • Technical Priorities — planning-weighted needs deployed through relationship strength, with product-specific opportunity rankings.
  • Benchmarking — an optional comparison of your product against competitors.

How priorities are calculated

For each technical requirement, multiply every customer planning weight by the relationship score, then sum the results. This creates the baseline technical ranking. Product-specific opportunity also applies that product's remaining satisfaction gap, revealing where engineering action matters most.

When to use a House of Quality

  • Early product development, to define specifications grounded in customer needs.
  • Service design, to translate patient, user, or client expectations into operational targets.
  • Continuous improvement, to focus limited resources on the highest-impact changes.
